You.....

So I'm a sucker for the "You" series, I just cannot stop reading/watching the books/series! Joe is the character I do not want to root for, but end up rooting for....or maybe just end up interested in his life.....yeah, I should stick with that idea!

The 2nd book in the series, "Hidden Bodies", really left me sad...it's one of the very few times that a series was better than the book. Netflix really kicked up season two a notch and the character "Love" was FREAKING CRAZY!!!!

I'm interested to see what happens in this 3rd installment, please be good please be good!, and of course for Joe to warm my TV screen again at some point!

Another one soon to be off the TBR list!

Terror in California....

Reading "I'll Be Gone in the Dark" and now watching the series on HBO, I'm amazed at the terror in California back in the 70's/80's. I'm the first to say, I'll read anything and everything set in California. Or watch any mystery/crime drama set in California. My fascination is real.

If given the resources, I could see myself following in McNamara's footsteps and I think that is why I invested so much into reading this book. I would find myself googling facts as I was reading and then going down the rabbit hole looking up something else, that leads to something else, and so on and so on - till I realized an hour or more had passed and I had to put down the phone and go back to reading. These are the books I love, the ones that have you investigating along with it!

If you haven't already, read "I'll Be Gone in the Dark" and then watch series on HBO - you will not be sorry!

Love of L.A. meets serial killer.....

 Happy Saturday!

Last night I started "I'll Be Gone in the Dark" by Michelle McNamara....and yes, as usual, I'm late to the party on this one. I find I would rather delay the books I know I will adore because once you read them, or at least for me, I don't always go back and re-read them. so the mystery is gone. Anyone else like that?

But in this TBR pick, we have my love of California and a serial killer! I love comparing the descriptions of Cali in the 80's/90's with the work of Michael Connelly. Just confirms my belief that MC can do no wrong - MC and TJR are two that I have HIGH standards for! Who do you guys have, author wise, on a podium?

As always, posting thoughts after I finish!

L.A. in the 90's.....

Happy Bosch Day!!! The final, ugh!, season of "Bosch" dropped on Prime today and I'm excited/sad to watch. I'm not ready to say goodbye!

Good thing we have all the books to read as well! Just finished "Truck Music" last night, and wow MC does NOT disappoint! He sets up the perfect L.A. in the 90's (Rodney King, O.J. trial) and suddenly we have the mob from Vegas/Chicago as well! The book from start to finish is absolute perfection and I love reading about the old-school ways of solving crime; pay phones, typewriters, etc - it's awesome!

As a tribute to L.A. in the 90's I figured it was only right to post a photo from back then versus the book cover! Stay tuned for the next pick on the TBR list....

Writing.....

So while I'm still reading "Truck Music" I decided to share some writing since I've been lagging on the book-talk! Hope you all enjoy!

Addison waited for him at the corner of Market Street, just as they had agreed. His call last night still playing in her mind.

“Meet me for lunch.” He told her, a command rather than a question. Yet, Addison agreed.

Now standing at the corner of Market Street, waiting to go to the Mexican place he took her on one of their first dates. Addison finds herself adjusting the dress, straightening her ponytail and making sure that her lip gloss is perfect. She wants to slap herself for caring but she can’t. Adjustments, checks, and perfection is part of the routine and routines are not meant to be broken.

He rounds the corner and stops, staring at Addison. She can feel the stare before their eyes meet and he scans over her appearance, making sure everything is in order. He has an image to keep after all. Even mid-day on Market Street, people could recognize him and by default Addison.

No hello, no hug. He opens the door to the restaurant and ushers her in. Addison can feel his hand on her lower back and she tries not to cringe. “It’s just lunch. It will be painless.” Funny how we are convinced if we tell ourselves something often enough, it will be true.

They took their seats and the hostess handed them the menus. He looked at Addison and then to the hostess and said, “Water, no ice, and one lime for both of us.” The hostess looked over in Addison’s direction and she gives a quick nod in agreement, the hostess walks off to prepare the drinks.

“I’ve decided to start dating again Addy.” Again, a statement. He was good at making statements, his career depended on him being abrupt and to the point.

“Good.” This was the only reply she could muster. The judge has not even signed the divorce decree and they still shared a condo. This lunch began to take on a new meaning now.

“You’ll need to be out by the end of the week.”

“Daniel, where am I supposed to go?” Most people would shy away from public confrontations but not Daniel, he thrived in this setting.

“You have the rest of the week to figure that out. And given the money you are stealing from me, that shouldn’t be a problem. Now what am I ordering you for lunch?” The question was less to her and more to himself.

2.

4 years before….

Spending the summer in her hometown taking summer classes was not an ideal plan for 22 year old, Addison. The rest of her friends were vacationing down south or working internships in some of the cities that Addison had on her to-visit list. Instead, Addison was sitting in a classroom listening to Professor Livingston discuss “The Novels of Toni Morrison” and while Addison had read them all, she took notes as though she had never heard of Toni Morrison.

“Success occurs when opportunity meets preparation.” Zig Ziglar

Double majoring in political science and psychology, with the hopes of going to law school, Addison knew she had her work cut out for her. Coming from divorced parents, Addison had sympathy for children who were stuck in the middle of their parents mess. Focusing on child psychology, she hoped to make the process easier on any children whose lives were going to be turned upside down.

With that focus added the number of classes needed to graduate so here she was taking six courses over summer one and summer two every summer in order to graduate on time. It would be worth it in the end, she knew it.

In between classes, hiding out in the library seemed like the best move. It wasn’t that Addison was embarrassed to be there but she also knew how judgmental people in her hometown were. Ideally, she would have stayed in Columbus and took these courses at Ohio State though the price difference between community college and a university for the same courses well, she couldn’t justify that to her mom. So here she was; living at home with her mom during the summers, working part time as a server, and taking courses. It had to be worth it in the end.

Walking into the library carrying her regular baggy of trail mix and a coffee, she made her way to the far back corner to hide out and read for awhile. Toni Morrison was always a delight to read and Addison was excited to get back to “Jazz.” Jilted love and obsession always made for good reads and throw in murder well that was as good as putting the cherry on the ice cream sundae.

“Don’t ever think I fell for you, or fell over you. I didn’t fall in love, I rose in it.”

Addison wasn’t sure if she imagined those words or if someone had said them so shaking her head she turned back to Joe and Violet, and their collapsing marriage.

“What’s the world for you if you can’t make it up the way you want it?”

Now this time she did not imagine that.

“Hello?” She whispers cautiously.

“Hello, back.” Came a voice from behind the stacks, after a moment of shuffling some books came a face on the other side of the stack.

“I’m Daniel.”

3.

“Addy, are you listening to me?”

Addison shook her head but quickly realized that came across a “no” and corrected her motion to a “yes.”

“You’ll need to be out by the end of the week, Jeff is going to be staying with me for awhile so I need the extra bedroom.”

“OK…..” What could she say? The condo they owned was in Daniel’s name, some tax loophole he told her about as he worked from home. Now, she knew better. Control, control was everything to Daniel.

The server came and laid the plates in front of them. Daniel had ordered them both the same thing, tamales and rice. A thought crossed her mind as she took the fork, “On your own, you can order anything you want.”

The conversation then took a weird and unexpected turn, Daniel began asking Addison her opinion about dating again. He wanted to know how young was too young; 23, 22, or how about 18? Addison felt relief and dread mixed together as she forced herself to eat some of the rice. She had gotten good about mixing the food around on her plate to make it seem like she was eating without really taking a bite. Daniel was always so wrapped up in whatever story he had for the moment that he never paid attention.

While Addison felt sorry for the next woman in Daniel’s life, she was grateful to be making it out alive. When she thought about what Daniel would do to the next victim, her stomach turned and she felt sick. What could she do? She did the right thing, eventually, by calling the police but until there was proof of his attacks - nothing could be done. Her attorney advised her to get out first before seeking to do anything else. Otherwise, who knew what would happen.

Here she was though, sitting across from the villain in her life and listening to him prepare to go seek another victim. Waves of guilt hit her as hard as Daniel did the first time, she felt as though she would be sick but somehow managed to keep it down. She couldn’t do this in front of him. Just get through and get out.

Daniel commanded attention when he spoke, he learned this from his parents. If you are not in control of the room, then you are not seen. He learned this lesson from an early age and thrived on it. As he spoke to her about dating other women it was as though their marriage never happened, and to Daniel that was most likely the case. Failure was never an option instead, you tuck the problem away (or pay it off) and then forget about it.

“It would be hard to find another virgin, I’m sure.” He paused and grinned at Addison. That grin sent shivers down her spine and she remembered that night in his apartment before she left to go back to school.

4.

From the moment Daniel introduced himself to her at the library, they were inseparable. Daniel went to the university in the next state over, just a 30 minute drive so he lived at home with his parents. As with Addison’s mom though, his parents preferred taking summer courses with community college rates versus the university rates. And to appeal his parents, he took a part-time job at the library. He didn’t need the money as his father was high up the ladder at Coca-Cola in Atlanta but his parents wanted him to learn responsibility.

When neither were at work or in class, they were together. Movies, out to dinner, hiking, and even a long weekend at the beach. It was clear this was much more than a summer fling to Addison and she hoped Daniel felt the same way. Meeting the parents came at the end July, Addison’s mom was skeptical at first but later confided in Addison that she trusted her opinion. Daniel’s parents were the opposite, they were over the moon for Daniel and Addison. A future attorney was a wonderful choice for their son as they had high ambitions for his future. Future-CEO was how they would refer to their son and with a future attorney for a wife, they would be unstoppable. Addison was far too in love by this point to see the writing on the wall.

Addison had always been the “good girl” and doing what was expected of her; getting good grades, attending church, and being the perfect daughter. When she went off to college, most people figured she would turn into a party girl as most who live in small towns tend to do but she remained focused. She barely dated during college, college was about the future and not finding a one-night stand or potential husband. College was what would guarantee her a six-figure career while relationships were at the back of her mind.

Addison was a 22-year old virgin and her friends mocked her relentlessly for it. Daniel had been much more understanding though, he didn’t seem to mind at all. He even seemed to be proud of this which was shocking to Addison but at the same time, made her fall for him even more. He never rushed her, “Plenty of time for that” he would always tell her. Addison had even reached the point thinking it would never happen, though she was longing for it by this time. While Daniel seemed content with what they had done so far, which was mild according to Addison’s friends. Blow jobs and making out was the extent of her experience, Addison wanted more.

Two nights before Addison was scheduled to move back into her dorm, Daniel took her out for an epic date. They went to see Dave Matthews Band in concert in Cincinnati, late dinner after, and followed by a night of dancing. Addison loved to dance, the feeling of freeing herself on the dance floor was her best form of therapy. Drinking was great but there was nothing like dancing it out. That night, she knew Daniel was it for her. He could not have planned a better night. The hotel room he booked was downtown so they could just walk back from the club; holding hands, stopping to kiss every now and then, and feeling his hands running up her back. Addison sensed a difference in him, she knew it was finally going to happen.

Back in the hotel room, Daniel opened the door and there were candles lit from the walkway to the bed and again all around the shower. Addison turned back to look at Daniel and he kissed her with such passion she felt herself collapse against him.

“You’re ready for me.” That was all said to Addison, and at the moment it seemed like an a question but in the future she would realize what he really meant.

She was worthy of fucking him.

Daniel pinned her against the wall and pulled her legs around him, kissing her and while Addison felt the moans rise in throat from just kissing, his hands were pulling off her clothes. Pinching her nipples while he was grinding against her, kissing her neck and nibbling on her shoulder. He picked her up and put her down on the bed, looking down at her while he stripped. Then he was inside her and with each thrust he repeated “mine, mine, mine” and Addison had no idea what he truly meant with those words.

Job hunting, life, depression, and therapy

Book updates have been lagging, I know. Sorry about that!

I took a job that turned out to be not exactly what I thought it would be, so I'm back to square one. Working-from-home is an absolute for me at least for another year till I build back up my immune system, so I've been stalking Indeed for the past week. Submitted over 50 applications and starting to get some interviews, fingers crossed!!!

Being attached to my laptop means no reading, and no reading means watching more TV. In the past week I've binged; "Hacks", "Mare of Easttown", and both seasons of "Dirty John." Plus watched a few movies/documentaries I've been putting off watching. Here is hoping one of these interviews will work out and I can get back to my TBR list!

Another reason for hoping for a job quickly is my depression. I feel it creeping back to the extent that it was back in March/April, so I really need a win here folks.

Still working on the Bosch series, "Trunk Music" is GREAT so far! And I'm counting down to the last, ugh, season!

Let's go to LA!

Next up on the TBR list, I'm heading back to LA and the Bosch universe. Since Prime is releasing the final season of "Bosch" this month, I figured I needed to read the next in the series.

Not a fan of this being the last season and hoping that Prime makes a series out of the McEvoy books (see my post about "The Poet" or "The Lincoln Lawyer" series! Fingers crossed!

When the Music Dies.....

TJR never fails me. She is one of the few authors that I know will never let me down.

But man, was this depressing. All the drugs and alcohol, the 70's were CRAZY and I'm so happy I missed it! But Daisy Jones is a character who I will always adore; her independence and stubborn ways are inspiring! While i'm sorry it took me so long to read "Daisy Jones & the Six" I'm also not sorry because now it's over, I pretty much read it in a day and a half!, and I'm mourning the fact that it's over. Except for Eddie, I'll never like Eddie, I will miss the rest of the band dearly.

I love Rock 'n' Roll.......

So I know this next TBR pick has been read by pretty much all other bookworms BUT, this gal has yet to read it and I'm super excited about it!!! "Daisy Jones and the Six" by Taylor Jenkins Reid, I love TJR, is about a fictional band in the 70's. So I'm here for all the sex, drugs, and rock 'n' roll that TJR has in store!!!

Being Honest....

Just finished "If I'm Being Honest" and while it was predictable, it reminded me of a mix between "Clueless" and "Gossip Girl."

Cameron attempts to change her image in the wake of being shut down by a boy she has deemed worthy of dating. And in her prep school, think Constance Billiard, they are reading "The Taming of the Shrew" which leads to an outline for self-change. I enjoyed the mix of the play within the book and while cheesy at times, it has a good story. Be the best HONEST version of yourself you can be.

Sometimes being honest is hard, right? We want people to like us so we tell them what they want to hear, or go along with their plans even though we want to do something else, and frankly it's exhausting after awhile (sometimes.) Being an introvert I feel I have two faces; I have the one that people who know me see/talk with and then I have the me I really am. It's hard not to cover the people one sometimes, and I get tired of trying. Instead, I just withdrawal and stop staying in touch. It gets lonely sometimes, but when I think of putting on my "people face" eh - I try to get over the loneliness. The honest version of myself would love nothing more than to live on the beach, work from home, have everything delivered, read, and just be. And while that's not everyone's cup of tea, that's me being the best honest version of myself.

If I'm Being Honest....

Next up on the TBR list, ''If I'm Being Honest" which has co-authors that I'm not really a fan of but the reviews on Goodreads are promising! I'm starting a new job this week so I'm looking for an easy read right now, and this looks like it will fit.

Race and privilege.....

WOW. For a debut, Kiley really knocked this out of the park.

Race, privilege, being (or thinking you are) woke, and an adorable little girl mixed in; I read this in one day.

Couple of notes:

1. We all need a friend like Zara.

2. Briar, I mean - am I the only one who wanted Emira to run away with the child?!?

3. Alix (or Alex), her character shows what happens when you are unable to leave high school behind.

4. Kelley, I'm glad he was vindicated BUT he still had a fetish. And also, learning that it could be a fetish (dating only one particular race different from your own) was new for me. I also just assumed people had types, but having it explained as a fetish makes a lot of sense.

I love books that make you think long after you've put them down, "The Hate U Give" being a prime example, and this is one of them. Reese has yet to steer me wrong in her picks!

Such a Fun Age....

Saturday morning and a new book to read from the TBR pile!

Next pick is "Such a Fun Age" which is also a Reese Bookclub Pick! I haven't heard a lot about this one, other than it's ranked highly on Goodreads, so I thought I would give it a try. One of the reviews I read stated "complex characters and complex truths", I'm all for that!

What happens in group...stays in group...or not....

I ordered this book on a whim, mainly because I follow Reese W on InstaGram and it was a pick for her bookclub. When I read the description, I felt something pulling me to order it and order it now. When "Group" arrived, it went onto my bookshelf amongst the MANY TBR's I have accumulated.

Now I'm a firm believer that sometimes you are called to read a book for a reason, and this is how I came to read "Group" before all of the others in my TBR pile. I've said before that this blog came about from a therapy session, the goal being to help me fill my days with projects to keep my mind in a positive space versus the dark one it tends to visit so often. I have depression, anxiety, and suicidal ideations and this past year has not helped; at all. When I started reading "Group" I kept shaking my head "yes" at every page for about the first 30 or so; always a good sign for a book! I wanted to scream out, "THIS IS ME!" but there is no one (other than a fur baby) to hear me scream. I wanted my own "Group" and a Dr. R - (which luckily i have) to listen to me check off how in-tune I am with this author.

Depression - check

Anxiety - check

Thoughts of suicide - check

Affair with married man - check

Falling for guys you know will not last - CHECK, CHECK, CHECK

And at the end of the "Group" I'm jealous, I'm jealous she found her happy ending. I started out wanting to read this for hope and now I'm just sitting here at 11PM on a Friday night typing into the internet-verse that I'm jealous. I absolutely loved "Group" and I recommend it to anyone and everyone who has ever struggled, or known someone who struggled. While I'm still sitting here in bed with my fur baby jealous over an author and her breakthrough in group therapy, I'm so happy I read this because maybe on the other side of jealousy there is hope.

Going to therapy.....

Since this whole reading, blogging, and working through my massive TBR-pile was an idea my therapist and I talked about; I figured it was time to read "Group: How One Therapist and a Circle of Strangers Saved My Life."

Now I'm fully prepared for the conversation about; are we sure this is the best book to read right now?!?! And if it ended badly, I would have waited till I was in a better mindset before reading. I'm counting on this one to give me some hope though, I need it.

Suffering from depression and anxiety is just overwhelming at times. I have these highs and then lows, which are horrible, and I feel like a burden to everyone and everything. People start to distance themselves from me, and I get it but it still hurts. And now that I'm immunocompromised, thanks COVID, and need to be extra careful - I find myself wanting to scream when I see pictures on InstaGram about travels and getting out and about. I used to travel. I used to get out and about. But I'm so scared, after being so sick, that I feel safer at home in a sheltered bubble. I like my bubble, I can control my bubble, and it's safe here. So right now, I need a shot of hope and that's why my next read is 'Group..."

Gossip Girl meets House of Windsor....

"American Royals." I shouldn't have been surprised by this one, but it was more "Gossip Girl" than I expected. The villains in this one have a Blair & Chuck vibe to them, it's no wonder this book was popular with the "Gossip Girl" crowd.

It is interesting to think about a "House of Washington" though vs the democracy we have today. I can't imagine Americans showing un-waving support to a King or Queen the way the Brits do. And while I have always been fascinated with the Royal Family (Team Diana, Team Harry & Meghan) I would not wish to be a "subject" to one. The US just does not feel as historic as England to justify a Royal Family. But this is just one gals opinion!

I will continue with this series though, I'm interested to see what becomes of the family and their love interests. Will Daphne grow a heart like Blair did? Will Beatrice get her man like Serena? Who knows but I'm interested to see.

XOXO - just kidding! : )

American Royals....

 Attention! Attention!

The next pick from my overwhelming TBR-list is......"American Royals"

In honor of Meghan & Harry's new arrival, I've decided to go ahead and start this series! I've heard nothing but good things about this and it will give a break from suspense reads for a bit, some light summer-fun reading! Thoughts once I've finished!

Dear Amazon Prime Video.....

The world NEEDS for you to make a series about Jack McEvoy after the final season of "Bosch." McEvoy is a perfect segue from the jazz-loving-LAPD-always-gets-his-man Bosch that we've come to know and love into the world of always-chasing-the-story McEvoy!

If you can't tell, I LOVED "The Poet" I cannot remember the last time I read a 500+ book in a matter of three days! Connelly is a pure genius at mastering the story and then turning your world upside down with a twist! I cannot recommend this one enough.

Now my biggest decision for a Sunday evening, continue with the "Bosch" book series or pick something else....will post the next read once I decide!

The Poet....

Next up on the TBR list is "The Poet" by Michael Connelly.

Michael Connelly is known for his Bosch and Lincoln Lawyer series which are all part of the Bosch Universe. Last year I watched "Bosch" on Prime for the first time and it was the closest thing I found to my favorites, "The Closer" and "Major Crimes." So I decided to read the series!

Little did I know that there were so many books in the Bosch Universe! So it will be a project but I'm planning on sticking with it. In honor of the final season (ugh!) of "Bosch" dropping on Prime this month (the 25th) I'm reading the next in the Bosch Universe, "The Poet."

"The Poet" will introduce a new character into this universe, Jack McEvoy, who is a reporter and I'm so excited to see how McEvoy and Bosch overlap! Plus, the killer leaves behind quotes from Edgar Allan Poe so it's a bookworms detective dream read!

Welcome back to Virgin River...

Visiting Virgin River again was such a treat! I love the small-town appeal of everyone helping one another and friendships that developed amongst everyone.

"Whispering Rock" will not be for everyone there are triggers (sexual assault, loss of spouse) but the overcoming is what Robyn Carr is known for, and she does not disappoint!

I highly recommend this series and the Netflix series as well! The Netflix series does not follow the books 100% which makes for two different storylines, I'm not always a fan of that but Netflix has done well by this one! I'm anxious to see what comes next for the folks of Virgin River!

Tuesday, June 1, 2021

Whispering Rock....

Moving right along with my TBR pile, next up is "Whispering Rock."

This is the 3rd book in the "Virgin River" series, which also happens to be a Netflix series as well, and I'm in love with this town. When "Virgin River" first dropped on Netflix I watched the series before reading the book, a first for me!, and Mel's cabin made it all worthwhile (aside from the great story!). The inside of the cabin is my dream design BUT I'll need that design in a cottage on the beach please! I'm not a mountain kinda gal. I'm an ocean waves, book in one hand, and margarita in the other hand kinda gal!

Thoughts after I finish!

The Moore Sisters.....

4 stars!!! Meeting the Moore sisters seemed like a blessing to Shay, but it turns out to be both a blessing and a curse. This book could be an episode of "Law & Order: SVU" easily! And without giving any spoilers away, this book will leave you questioning any random encounter you ever have.

I've enjoyed all three co-authored books written by Hendricks & Pekkanen! There are twists and turns you will never expect, as any mystery/thriller should do. I highly recommend all of their books and hope you will enjoy them as much as I did!

Publisher Appreciation Post!!! RE: Simon & Schuster/Avid Reader Press

It's Wednesday which means it is time for a publisher appreciation post! But this Wednesday, I have a special treat for you all - a bo...
